New Year, New You: Setting Healthy Habits for the Next 12 Months

By January 10, 2023September 18th, 2024No Comments

It’s the start of a new year, and for many of us, that means it’s time to set new goals and make a fresh start. While resolutions to lose weight, exercise more, and eat healthier are common, it’s important to remember that lasting change comes from building healthy AND sustainable habits. In addition to physical health, it’s also important to focus on mental and emotional well-being.

Break it down

One of the most effective ways to set yourself up for success is by breaking your goals down into small, manageable steps. Instead of resolving to completely overhaul your diet or exercise routine, start with small changes that you can stick to. For example, you can start by drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning, taking the stairs instead of the elevator or meditating for 5 minutes as soon as you wake up. As you build momentum, you can gradually add more healthy habits to your routine such as setting a goal to walk 10,000 steps daily, implementing a daily 15 minute mindful meditation practice or consuming more Chana Masala than you do Pakoras.

Have fun!

Another key to success is to focus on building healthy habits that you enjoy. If you don’t enjoy going to the gym, you’re not likely to stick with it. Instead, find an activity you love, whether it’s Bollywood dancing, hiking, or swimming. This way, you’ll be more likely to make it a regular part of your routine.

Keep it consistent

It’s also important to remember that healthy habits don’t have to be all or nothing. Allow yourself some flexibility and don’t beat yourself up if you slip up. Instead, focus on getting back on track and making healthy choices as often as possible. For example, going meatless every Monday of the week or going on a walk/run every Wednesday with a friend. Make sure you pick habits that are practical to stick to and work with your own schedule.

Mind matters

Try to reduce stress and practice self-care by setting aside time for activities that bring you joy, such as reading, writing, painting or spending time with loved ones.

The start of a new year is the perfect time to set healthy habits for the next 12 months. By breaking your goals down into small, manageable steps, focusing on activities you enjoy, and allowing for flexibility and self-care, you’ll be more likely to make lasting changes that will improve your overall health and well-being.
