The Fundraising Gala held by Ashiyanaa on September 16th was a truly humbling experience. We had not anticipated, to the right intensity, the ‘lumens of light’ from those of you who attended.
You were amazing; listened with your hearts to the many stories shared, saw with your eyes and internalized the struggles and needs of people within our community. Your pledges and donations surpassed our expectations.
You have renewed our energy and sense of purpose, and provided the fiscal strength to push forward with our programs and we could not be more grateful – THANK YOU!
What it means to be ‘Lighting the Way’
We South Asians have a shared goal and interest to see the community grow in a positive way, “with dignity, hope and self-sufficiency”. We would like our South Asian community to be respected, for its heritage, contribution to society and achievements, big and small.
It’s no small order, and we need to integrate with the larger civic society to achieve it. Interact more, upgrade our communication skills, befriend people beyond cultural curtains. And on the way, shed historic biases and prejudices.
In other words, get to social equity. Share one’s lives and experiences, and understand the lives of others, bringing light all around.
Shine on, it’s a big and continuous campaign!
All this is complex, as we can tell you from our own work and experience.
At the micro level are the individuals who need urgent help. We address each one’s specific needs and guide them to new levels of empowerment and self-sufficiency. We nurture professionals, agencies, service providers and first responders, enlisting their help as needed, sensitizing them with training on cultural competency.
Hand in hand, we hold conversations at different forums, to different groups, faiths, State and County organizations.
Changing lives and mindsets is not easy, but with all of you lighting the way, together we can……
