Petition made to add disclaimers in films that showcase domestic violence

By March 8, 2020March 14th, 2022No Comments

A petition has been made to Indian authorities in charge of  film certification for on-screen warnings and disclaimers about domestic violence when such scenes are portrayed in films. This move has been timed with the release of ‘Thappad’ (or ‘Slap’), a film about a woman’s sudden realization of how she is being psychologically battered by her husband: a single slap is the trigger.

The petition has been firmly supported by the film’s actor and director, who have even made a special social media video (see below): the video has gone viral. And as of March 8, the online petition on change.org has gathered 214,771 signatures….

Could this become a worldwide campaign?

As we cross another International Women’s Day, it is heartening to note that protests, activism, reform, legislation are all working together, making small significant steps to correct discrimination and violence against women.

In this case, the petitioner represents a vibrant women’s rights organization Breakthrough that works at ground level to change traditional and corrosive mindsets about gender and dominance.

Video translation

If it’s alcohol,

we put “alcohol consumption is injurious to health” on the screen…

Cigarette?

It’s “cigarette smoking is injurious to health”…

But, no disclaimer on violence..? where films containing scenes of domestic violence are screened, no disclaimer such as

“no animals were harmed during the making of this film”?

Maybe for some a slap is not a big issue??

But if you think that domestic violence needs to be addressed, in the same vein as cigarettes and alcohol

sign the petition on change.org/EkThappad

A slap… is not… a small or simple matter…
